Hagar wasn’t supposed to matter. She was a servant. A foreigner. A woman caught in the fallout of someone else’s bad decisions. She was used, then discarded. Abused, then abandoned. So she ran—pregnant, alone, and invisible.
But she wasn’t invisible to God.
In the barren wilderness, where no one else pursued her, God did. And not with wrath, but with a question: “Where have you come from and where are you going?” (Genesis 16:8). Not because He didn’t know—but because He wanted her to know that He saw her. All of her. Her pain. Her story. Her future. Her worth.
She gave Him a name that appears nowhere else in Scripture: **El Roi—The God who sees me.** If you have ever felt forgotten, mistreated, or overlooked — if you have ever run into the wilderness wondering whether anyone notices or cares — let this truth anchor you: God sees you.
He doesn’t just see your actions. He sees your wounds. He sees what others did to you that no one else knows. He sees the weight you carry, the tears you hide, the choices you regret, and the trauma you try to forget. And His seeing is not passive. It is personal. Compassionate. Redemptive.
Hagar didn’t encounter a harsh Judge. She encountered a faithful God. One who knew her name. One who promised a future for her son. One who spoke with clarity and comfort. She returned to a hard situation, yes—but she returned seen.
And when you’ve been seen by God, you’re never the same.
You may not get the apology you deserve. You may not be understood by those who hurt you. But you are known by the One who matters most. And He does not look away.
So bring your pain to El Roi. Bring the memories, the silence, the scars. You don’t need to clean them up before you speak. He saw them long before you did. And He is not backing away.
The God who sees is also the God who stays.
