“This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all
his troubles.”
—Psalm 34:6
The world does not usually listen to the poor. The broken are overlooked. The desperate are silenced. And those who cry out for help are often seen as weak, needy, or unstable. But not to God.
David calls himself “this poor man”—not because he lacked resources, but because he had come to the end of himself. He was no longer full of strategies. He had no defense to offer. No strength to boast in. He cried. And the Lord heard.
This verse is not sentimental. David wrote it after pretending to be insane before Abimelech, running for his life, having lost his position, his reputation, and his peace. His circumstances were not noble. His desperation was not polished. But his cry was real—and God answered. There is no brokenness too dark for the Lord to enter. There is no chaos too deep for Him to rescue. God is not drawn to the respectable; He is drawn to the repentant. He hears the cry of the afflicted. He answers the call of the poor. And He does not require strength before He saves. You may not have elegant words. You may not have clarity. You may only have a cry. But that is enough. “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will rescue you, and you will honor Me” (Psalm 50:15). That is His promise. Not to the strong, but to the surrendered.
You don’t need to know how the rescue will come. You just need to know who to cry to.

Reflection Questions:
- What cry have you been holding back from God because you felt it was not articulate or worthy enough to bring?
- How does David’s posture — coming ‘poor,’ without strategy or polished words — challenge the way you approach God?
- What would it look like to stop waiting until you have the right words and simply cry out to God honestly today?
Suggested Prayer:
*Lord, I have been holding back the cry because I wasn’t sure it was worth bringing—I bring it now, unpolished and unfinished, and I trust that You hear.* [Continue the Journey](https://amzn.to/3MWUjo0) {width=”0.9652777777777778in”
