“To declare that the LORD is upright; He is my rock, and there is no
unrighteousness in Him.” — Psalm 92:15
Old age is not merely about surviving the passage of time. According to Psalm 92, it is a stage of proclamation. The righteous—those who are still bearing fruit and remain full of sap and very green—do so *to declare*. Their lives become living testimonies.
But what do they declare? That “the LORD is upright.” That He is steady, dependable, holy, and good. That there is “no unrighteousness in Him.” That He has been faithful from beginning to end.
In a culture that idolizes youth and discards the elderly, the psalmist flips the narrative. The older saint is not diminished—they are amplified. Their testimony matters more, not less. Their years are not wasted—they are weighty. And the fruit of their lives is not ornamental—it is evidence.
When God sustains the righteous in old age, it isn’t for quiet retirement into obscurity. It’s for public declaration of His faithfulness. Every wrinkle, every scar, every story whispered with trembling voice proclaims: “The Lord is upright. He kept His promises. He was with me the whole way.”
In Deuteronomy 32:4, Moses calls God “The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are just.” That’s the message of the seasoned believer. Not that life was easy, but that God was steady. Not that they never failed, but that God never did.
And notice the contrast: “There is no unrighteousness in Him.” That means there is no shadow, no deceit, no injustice, no failure in God. While the world is filled with inconsistency and betrayal, God stands as a Rock—unchanging, holy, and pure.
What does it mean to “declare” this? It means to testify—not only with words, but with your life. A righteous person who finishes well becomes a living proclamation. Their peace in difficulty. Their joy in pain. Their trust when others panic. These speak loudly.
Psalm 71 echoes this calling: “O God, You have taught me from my youth, and I still declare Your wondrous deeds. And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come” (Psalm 71:17–18). The older saint does not retire from righteousness. They take on the mantle of witness.
It is not always the loudest voices or the youngest bodies that change the world. Often, it is the seasoned soul—anchored in the unchanging goodness of God—who quietly speaks what cannot be ignored: God is faithful. He can be trusted.
And that’s why He keeps you fruitful—to declare it.
