“And their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished
from their sight. They said to one another, ‘Were our hearts not
burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road…?’”Luke 24:31–32
They had walked with Him. Talked with Him. Listened to Him open the Scriptures. And yet, for miles, they didn’t realize who He was.
Two disciples on the road to Emmaus—grieving, confused, disillusioned. The One they thought would redeem Israel had been crucified. The tomb was sealed. Their hope was buried.
And Jesus met them in their confusion. But He didn’t reveal Himself immediately.
Instead, He wove truth into their sorrow. He spoke to their questions. Reframed their understanding. Pointed them back to the promises they had forgotten. He gave them theology before He gave them recognition. And when they finally saw Him—when their eyes were opened—it was only after He vanished.
They realized: He had been with them all along.
This is how God often moves.
We don’t recognize Him until after the fact. We walk through pain, ask our questions, struggle to understand—and only later, looking back, we say, “He was there.” He was speaking. He was opening the Word. He was guiding our steps. But we were too caught in grief or confusion to see it clearly.
God is often clearest in hindsight. What makes no sense in the moment becomes unmistakable later.
And that’s not a failure of faith—it’s the unfolding of perspective. Maybe you’re on your own road to Emmaus right now. You’re walking with questions. Things haven’t turned out the way you expected. The tomb is still too fresh, and hope still feels distant. But He is walking with you—even if your eyes aren’t opened yet.
The miracle may already be in progress. The thread may already be running through your story. And one day, you’ll say it too: “Did not my heart burn within me? He was here the whole time.”

Lord, even when I don’t recognize You, I trust You’re near. Walk with me in confusion. Open my eyes in Your time. And let my heart burn with truth, even before I see Your face.
