“I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me and heard my
cry. He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the mud;
and He set my feet on a rock, making my footsteps firm.”Psalm 40:1–2
Some pits you fall into. Others you dig yourself.
Whether it was failure, addiction, shame, betrayal, or despair—David knew what it meant to be stuck. He doesn’t describe a mild setback. He describes a pit of destruction. Mud. Mire. A place you can’t climb out of, no matter how hard you try. A place where every attempt to fix it only sinks you deeper.
But the good news of Psalm 40 isn’t that David found a way out. It’s that God reached in.
“He inclined to me and heard my cry.” God didn’t ignore him. He leaned in. He listened. And then He acted. “He brought me up…” Not by tossing a rope. Not by shouting instructions from above. *He descended into the mess* and lifted David out.
That’s what God does for the broken. He doesn’t shame you for being in the pit. He meets you there. He pulls you out. And He puts your feet on solid ground.
But don’t miss the order: David waited. He cried. Then God lifted. This wasn’t instant. Deliverance came after desperation. Hope rose out of helplessness. God wasn’t late—but He wasn’t rushed, either.
You might feel like you\’re still in the pit. Crying. Waiting. Wondering if God still hears you.
He does.
He sees the mud. He knows how it got there. And He’s not afraid of it. There is no pit too deep for the arm of the Lord. No failure so dark that grace can’t reach it. No shame so heavy that He can’t lift it. He’s not waiting for you to get a foothold. He is your foothold. He sets your feet on the rock—Christ Himself. He doesn’t just give you a new direction. He gives you a new foundation.
So don’t believe the lie that you’re too far gone. The gospel was made for people in pits. And the One who reached into David’s darkness still reaches into yours.
Wait on Him. Cry to Him. And trust this: He will lift you.

*Lord, I am still in the pit and I don’t know how long—I cry to You honestly and I wait, trusting that no place is too deep for Your arm to reach.*
