“‘Go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that
comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a coin.’”Matthew 17:27
It was a simple question:\
“Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?”
Peter, caught off guard, quickly says yes. But the conversation wasn’t over. When he returns to Jesus, the Lord already knows—without being told—and gently reframes the moment.
“What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings collect customs?” The point was subtle: Jesus didn’t owe the tax. He was the Son. But so as not to cause offense, He would provide for it—miraculously. And the method? Not a bag of coins. Not a wealthy benefactor. But a fish.
“Go throw in a hook… the first fish you catch will have the coin.” This is one of the quietest miracles in Scripture. There’s no drama. No crowd. Just a sovereignly appointed fish, swimming in the Sea of Galilee with a coin lodged in its mouth.
God had already aligned everything—the need, the moment, the fish, the exact coin, the conversation. All Peter had to do was obey.
This is how God often provides. Not through excess, but through exactness. Not always early, but always on time. He threads His provision through natural means—yet the timing, the precision, the uniqueness—makes it unmistakably divine.
Maybe your need feels small. Maybe you feel silly praying about it. Maybe you’ve said “yes” to something and are wondering how you’ll cover the cost.
Trust this: God knows before you ask. And He’s already aligning your fish.
