“And Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Are these all the boys?’ And he said, ‘The
youngest is still left, but behold, he is tending the sheep.’ … So
he sent word and brought him in… and the Lord said, ‘Arise, anoint
him; for this is he.’”1 Samuel 16:11–12
David wasn’t even invited to the ceremony.
When Samuel came to anoint the next king of Israel, Jesse lined up all of his sons—except one. David was left in the field, tending sheep. Overlooked. Unimportant. Unlikely. Everyone assumed God’s choice had to be someone taller, stronger, older, more obvious.
But God doesn’t choose based on appearance. He looks at the heart. And David, the forgotten shepherd boy, was the one He had been preparing all along.
That’s how God weaves.
David’s days in obscurity weren’t wasted. While others were gaining public favor, David was gaining God’s favor. While his brothers trained for battle, David learned faithfulness in solitude. While no one was watching, God was building a heart that could carry the weight of a crown.
Sometimes the most significant parts of your story happen in the places no one sees.
Rejection isn’t the end. It might be the refining. And obscurity isn’t wasted—it’s often preparation. God may be training you in hiddenness for something you’re not yet ready to carry in visibility.
And when the time comes, no human oversight can override divine appointment.
David didn’t promote himself. He was called in. God made sure the oil didn’t flow until the right head stood in the room.
Maybe you feel like you’ve been left in the field—overlooked, underestimated, forgotten. But the One who sees in secret knows your name. And He has not forgotten the threads He’s been weaving in you. The rejection of man is never a barrier to the calling of God.

Lord, I trust that even when I am unseen by others, I am fully known and cherished by You. Help me be faithful in the field, patient in the waiting, and confident that no rejection can undo Your calling. Amen.
