“Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.” (Psalm 41:9)

One of the deepest pains in suffering is the loneliness that comes when others cannot—or will not—understand what you are going through. Sometimes friends offer quick solutions instead of compassion. Sometimes they keep their distance, unsure of what to say. And sometimes, like Job’s companions, they speak words that only add to the weight.

David felt this isolation. Betrayed by a close friend, he experienced not only the hardship of his circumstances but the sting of being misunderstood and abandoned. Jesus knew it too—His disciples fell asleep in His hour of deepest need, and Judas, one of the twelve, betrayed Him.

When others don’t understand, God still does. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that our High Priest “sympathizes with our weaknesses,” because He has been tempted and tested in every way, yet without sin. His understanding is not distant or theoretical—it’s the understanding of One who has been there.

This truth frees us from demanding that others fully “get” what we’re experiencing. While the comfort of human empathy is valuable, our deepest need is met in the One who never misunderstands, never withdraws, and never abandons His own. We can take our honest feelings to Him, knowing He will hear with perfect compassion.

And when we meet others in their pain, our own experiences can help us show the very understanding and presence that we once longed for. In this way, God redeems even the loneliness of suffering by turning it into a gift we can give to others.

Prayer Prompt

Lord, when others don’t understand, remind me that You do. Help me find comfort in Your presence and give me grace to extend that same compassion to others who feel alone in their pain.
