“How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?” (Psalm 13:1)

One of the most difficult aspects of suffering is when God seems far away. The heavens feel like brass, prayers echo back unanswered, and His presence—once so near—now feels hidden. David knew this feeling well. His raw questions in the Psalms remind us that even those closest to God sometimes wrestle with His apparent silence.

It’s important to remember that God’s nearness is not measured by our emotions. Our feelings can shift with exhaustion, grief, or fear, but His promises remain steady. Jesus assured His followers, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). Whether we feel it or not, His presence is real and unbroken.

Sometimes, God’s silence is an invitation to deeper faith. In the absence of immediate answers, we learn to cling to what we know of His character—His holiness, His goodness, His love—rather than what we see in our circumstances. Silence can stretch our trust beyond the comfort of visible signs and into the realm of pure faith.

David’s psalm doesn’t end with despair. By verse 5, he says, “But I have trusted in Your lovingkindness; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.” He chooses to trust what he knows about God over what he feels in the moment. That choice is open to us too.

If God feels distant today, hold onto His Word, recall His past faithfulness, and remember that His seeming absence may be the very soil where your trust grows strongest.
