“In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will.” – Ephesians 1:4–5

Gratitude deepens when we realize that salvation did not begin with us. It began in the heart of God—before the foundation of the world.

Paul tells the Ephesians that God’s plan to redeem was not reactive. It wasn’t a rescue operation devised after sin entered the world. It was a sovereign, loving, intentional decision made in eternity past. “In love He predestined us…” Not reluctantly. Not conditionally. But “according to the kind intention of His will.”

This is not a dry theological statement. It is the soil of thankfulness. If you are in Christ, you are not merely forgiven—you are chosen. Not barely accepted, but adopted. Not an afterthought, but eternally loved. The God who needs nothing wanted you. Not because of your potential. Not because of your works. But because of His love.

And that love took action. It pursued you through time. It laid hold of you in Christ. It overcame your rebellion. It paid the price for your sin. And it didn’t just rescue you from wrath—it brought you into relationship. You were adopted through Jesus Christ to Himself.

We do not give thanks simply because we are saved from something. We give thanks because we are saved to Someone. We were not just rescued—we were wanted. And we were not only wanted—we were drawn near to the Father through the Son.

The phrase “to Himself” is staggering. God didn’t redeem you so you could simply serve Him, obey Him, or worship Him from afar. He redeemed you so that you would belong to Him. You were made to dwell in His presence, walk in His favor, and be called by His name.

This is where thankfulness becomes worship. It’s not merely gratitude for a changed status. It’s gratitude for being brought into the heart of God’s eternal purpose. Before you drew breath, God had already determined to pour out His kindness on you in Christ (Ephesians 2:7). And nothing can undo what He has done.

Some days, gratitude may feel hard. You may feel unseen, unworthy, or forgotten. But the truth remains: you are chosen. You are loved. You are redeemed. Your name is written in heaven, not because you were worthy, but because He was willing.

And if that does not stir thanksgiving in your soul, pause longer. Sit in the reality. You were chosen by the God who sees all. Loved by the God who needs nothing. Redeemed by the God who gave everything. You belong to Him.

Thank God that He chose you, loved you, and redeemed you—not because of who you are, but because of who He is. Rest in your adoption, and praise Him for it.
