“Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison.” (2 Corinthians 4:16–17)
Some suffering is brief, like a passing storm. But other suffering lingers—an illness with no cure, a grief that never fully fades, a hardship that seems woven into daily life. When the trial is long, the temptation is strong to believe that God has forgotten or that nothing good can come of it.
Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians offer a different perspective. He doesn’t deny the pain—he calls it affliction—but he also compares it to the eternal glory it is producing. The contrast is staggering: what feels crushing now is actually “light” compared to the weight of glory God is working in us.
Lingered suffering shifts the focus from endurance in the short term to perseverance for the long haul. It teaches us a deeper dependence on God’s grace, because daily renewal becomes not just helpful but essential. This is why Paul says the inner man is “being renewed day by day”—it’s a continual supply of strength for a continual burden.
The hope for the believer is not that every trial will end in this life, but that every trial will be transformed in eternity. No pain will be wasted; no tear will be forgotten. God’s work is not measured by how quickly He changes our circumstances but by how completely He changes us.
