“Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel.” (Philippians 1:12)
When we suffer, our natural instinct is to want the pain removed as quickly as possible. But sometimes, God has a bigger purpose—one that extends far beyond our own comfort. He can use our suffering as a stage for the gospel, showing others the hope, peace, and endurance that only come from Him.
Paul wrote to the Philippians from prison. His freedom was gone, his body likely weary, and yet he saw his chains not as wasted time but as a divine opportunity. Guards heard the gospel because they were chained to him. Believers grew bolder because they saw his courage. His suffering became a megaphone for the message of Christ.
When trials come, we may not see how God is using them in the moment. A hospital stay might place us beside someone who needs to hear about Jesus. A financial setback might cause others to notice our contentment in God’s provision. Even grief can draw others to the God who comforts us.
This doesn’t make the suffering itself pleasant—but it does give it purpose. If others see Christ more clearly through our faith in hardship, then the trial becomes an open door rather than a dead end. And in eternity, we may discover that those moments of pain were among the most fruitful in our lives.
