Day 16: Giving Thanks in All Things

“In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Sometimes we ask, “What is God’s will for my life?” expecting specific answers—where to live, what job to take, what relationship to pursue. But in this verse, God gives us something even more foundational: thankfulness. Not for everything. But in everything.

Paul’s command is clear and comprehensive. Give thanks in everything—the joyful and the sorrowful, the easy and the difficult, the clear and the confusing. Gratitude, for the believer, is not occasional. It is essential. And it is God’s will.

Why? Because giving thanks is not just good manners. It’s spiritual alignment. It keeps us rightly positioned before a sovereign, good, and wise God. When we choose thankfulness, we declare that God is in control—even when we are not. We say, “I don’t need to understand to trust. I don’t need to enjoy to rejoice. I don’t need to agree to obey.”

This is not a call to pretend. God does not ask us to be thankful for evil, pain, or sin. But He does call us to be thankful in those situations—because He is still present, still working, and still worthy. He does not leave us in the fire. He joins us there. He does not waste suffering. He uses it for His purposes. He does not abandon us in confusion. He walks with us through it.

And that’s why thanksgiving is a discipline, not a mood. Gratitude is not something we feel our way into—it’s something we choose, over and over, until it becomes the lens through which we see our lives.

Notice the final phrase: “this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” This is not a generic command. It’s for those who are in Christ. Those who have already received the greatest gift—salvation. If you are in Him, you are eternally secure, forgiven, and loved. And that means that even when life doesn’t make sense, your standing before God never shifts. Gratitude flows not from changing situations, but from the unchanging truth of our position in Christ.

To give thanks in everything is to declare that nothing in your life is beyond God’s reach, His care, or His redemptive power. It’s to say that the same God who began a good work in you will complete it—and every circumstance along the way is part of His plan.

Cross-References

Questions for Reflection

  • What current situation are you struggling to give thanks in?
  • How might your perspective change if you saw that moment through the lens of God’s will for you in Christ?
  • What would it look like to offer thanks today—not because of what is happening, but because of who God is?

Prayer Prompt

Bring your current situation to God. Then thank Him—not necessarily for the pain, but for His presence, His purpose, and His promise to work even this for your good.
